The Belle II Explorer Event is a one-day workshop event on elementary elementary particle physics that we every year before our Belle II summer workshop. The main goal of this event is to be informative and enlightening for STEM undergraduate students to generate interest about particle physics. We also hope the Belle II Explorer event will serve as a jumping off point for Belle II to be able to host extended undergraduate research experiences.
The Belle II Explorer event includes interactive introductory sessions on the fundamental particle physics, providing enough context to understand how we ended up with the Standard Model; flavor physics, discussing how the asymmetry between matter and antimatter fits in; the Belle II Experiment, the background behind the experiment and specifics behind how the detector works; and a research showcase from undergraduate and graduate students in Belle II.
This is followed by a Masterclass session, a hands-on window into Belle II research using real Belle II data. Examples on the material covered in this session is provided here: https://belle2.ijs.si/public/
Finally, the session typical ends with two parallel panel sessions. For students, panelists (Belle II graduate students) discuss their experience and various challenges on getting into graduate school and how they made the decision to work on Belle II. For faculty, a discussion on student research programs are held and how to provide uplifting and valuable research experiences to students.
